What is a transvaginal ultrasound scan?

A transvaginal scan forms the basis of a fertility evaluation and treatment plan for pregnancy if you struggle with infertility.

When you start your period, book an appointment for between day two and five of your cycle for a transvaginal ultrasound scan. The scan will measure the size of your ovaries and their appearance will be assessed by your gynaecologist. You may have your blood taken to measure different hormone levels such as follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin (PRL).

If you have any queries or concerns, please talk to your consultant.

You will have another appointment around a week later for another ultrasound scan. This scan’s purpose is to look for follicles growing within the ovaries where the oocytes (eggs) develop. You may require a scan a few days later, depending on the rate of growth of the follicles.

Urine test

Once your follicles start to show satisfactory growth, you will be asked to test your urine every morning to detect the LH surge. This sudden increase in LH (luteinising hormone) triggers ovulation (release of the eggs).

When you detect the LH surge, arrange to have a PCT (postcoital test) the next morning, and have sex that night. You cannot have a bath before this test, but you can have a shower.

Sperm test

Whilst your cycle is being monitored, your partner will need to have their semen analysed.
