Tibial Nerve Stimulation for Overactive Bladder

This procedure involves stimulating the Tibial Nerve (located above the ankle) with electricity. The tibial nerve runs up your leg to the sacral nerves which control bladder function and the pelvic floor muscles.

Tibial Nerve stimulation is recommended to people who have issues with urinary incontinence (bladder problems). Tibial Nerve stimulation is only considered if previous treatment options have been unsuccessful. Bladder problems will usually be treated with behavioural therapy or medication before other treatment options are considered.

This treatment is unsuitable for people who:

• Have an implantable defibrillator
• Are prone to excessive bleeding
• Have Tibial Nerve nerve damage
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the treatment
• If you have a pacemaker you may be able to have treatment but this will need to be discussed with your cardiologist

• Skin redness
• Skin allergy
• Slight pain – during or after the procedure
• Minor Itching
