Operative Hysteroscopy (OPH)
A safe, minimally invasive procedure designed to help us understand and address conditions inside your uterus, while keeping you comfortable throughout.
Overview
Hysteroscopy is a gentle, minimally invasive procedure that allows your consultant to carefully examine and treat conditions inside the uterus using a thin, flexible telescope (hysteroscope).
It is commonly used to investigate issues such as abnormal bleeding, remove polyps or fibroids, and address other uterine conditions without the need for open surgery.
For patients trying to conceive, hysteroscopy can also play an important role in fertility assessment and support, helping to create the best conditions for successful embryo implantation and a healthy pregnancy.
Throughout the procedure, our team focuses on your comfort, understanding, and emotional wellbeing, providing clear explanations and personalized care so you feel supported and confident every step of the way.

Understanding Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to look inside the uterus using a thin, flexible telescope called a hysteroscope. It is often recommended to investigate or treat a variety of uterine conditions, and the reasons for requesting one can include:
1. Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Heavy periods, irregular bleeding, or bleeding between periods may indicate underlying issues such as polyps, fibroids, or thickened uterine lining.
- Hysteroscopy allows your doctor to diagnose the cause and, in many cases, treat it at the same time.
2. Fibroids and polyps
- Uterine fibroids (non-cancerous growths) or polyps can cause bleeding, pain, or fertility challenges.
- Hysteroscopy can identify, monitor, or remove these growths without the need for open surgery.
3. Fertility assessment and support
- For patients trying to conceive, hysteroscopy can check for structural issues, scar tissue, or other abnormalities that might affect implantation.
- It helps create optimal conditions for embryo implantation, supporting successful fertility treatment.
4. Recurrent miscarriage or pregnancy complications
- Hysteroscopy can help detect problems such as adhesions, septum, or abnormal uterine shape, which may contribute to repeated pregnancy loss or complications.
- Correcting these issues can improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
5. Investigation of other symptoms
- Pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or other unexplained uterine symptoms may prompt a hysteroscopy.
- The procedure provides a clear view of the uterine cavity so your doctor can make accurate diagnoses.
6. Minimally invasive treatment
This avoids the need for more invasive surgery, reducing recovery time and minimizing discomfort.
In many cases, hysteroscopy is not just diagnostic—it can also be therapeutic, allowing your doctor to remove polyps, fibroids, or scar tissue during the same procedure.
A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your consultant to look inside your uterus using a thin, flexible telescope called a hysteroscope. It is usually performed as a day-case procedure, which means most patients can go home the same day. Here’s what to expect:
1. Preparation
- Your consultant will explain the procedure and answer any questions, ensuring you feel informed and reassured.
- You may be offered local anaesthetic, sedation, or general anaesthetic depending on your preference and the type of procedure.
- You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a short period if sedation or general anaesthetic is planned.
2. During the procedure
- You will lie comfortably on a procedure table, similar to a routine examination.
- The hysteroscope, a thin, flexible telescope with a light and camera, is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
- Saline or another safe fluid may be used to gently expand the uterine cavity, giving your consultant a clear view.
- The doctor carefully examines the uterine lining, checking for polyps, fibroids, scar tissue, adhesions, or structural abnormalities.
- If necessary, minor treatments such as removal of polyps, fibroids, or scar tissue can be done during the same procedure.
3. Duration
- The procedure usually takes 10–30 minutes, depending on whether any treatment is performed at the same time.
4. After the procedure
- Most patients experience mild cramping or spotting for a short period.
- You will be monitored briefly and then discharged with clear aftercare instructions and follow-up arrangements.
- Recovery is typically quick, allowing most people to resume normal activities within a day or two.
5. Support and comfort
For fertility patients, additional care and support are provided to optimize conditions for successful implantation and conception.
Throughout the procedure, our team provides gentle, personalised care, ensuring you feel comfortable and supported.
We explain each step and address any concerns, so you feel in control and reassured.
At Midlands Women’s Health, we understand that recovery after a procedure is just as important as the procedure itself. Most minor gynaecological procedures are day-case treatments, meaning you can return home the same day.
During the first few days, it’s common to experience mild cramping, light bleeding, or spotting, which usually settles quickly. We provide clear, detailed aftercare instructions so you know exactly what to expect and how to care for yourself at home.
Our team is always available to answer questions and offer support, ensuring you feel confident throughout your recovery. Follow-up appointments are arranged as needed to monitor your progress and discuss results or next steps.
For patients who had fertility-related procedures, additional guidance is provided to support implantation and optimise your chances of a successful pregnancy.
Your comfort, safety, and peace of mind are our top priorities, and we make sure you feel supported every step of the way.
